Album Review -Made in Lagos -
Although 2020 was quite the dull year for all of us and everywhere. In the Afro beats it’s been nothing but hot. Full of joyful inspiring and lively hitmakers. Nothing but hits and eternal vibes. The three kings of Afrobeat’s came to head with their highly anticipated Albums. Wizkid, Davido, and Bruna Boy. It was a tough year in Afrobeat considering all these drops. In this article, I am here to discuss Made in Lagos by Wizkid. A well-anticipated album for the last 2 years. We will discuss his new sound, Twitter reactions, and top 3 songs.
Wizkid last dropped an EP in 2019. Soundman Vol.1. Two songs to highlight were “Jam” and Blow. This album was a new sound from Wizkid. A different sound from his last albums. We were first introduced to this sound in 2016 from his album sound from the other side Come closer. The year 2016 was interesting in music. Through Drake, Afro beats were being introduced to the world with “Come Closer”, and “One Dance” at this time, Wizkid was being introduced to the world as well. The sound that we hear on Made in Lagos has been in the process for some years, but this is the first time we are hearing it as an Album.
Wizkid’s sound that we now see on Made in Lagos has been around for some time. This sound has been described as a “VIBE”. It’s quite different from the normal “Wedding music” from his last three albums. The traditional heavy bass, drums, and fast pace Afro beats with some Yoruba and other strong cultural attachments, but this sound is a slower pace. Slower beats and a moderate speed on the base.
He teased us with “Ghetto love” in 2019, with the similar sound from his wedding music. Then he gave us his official album single for Made in Lagos with “No-stress” where we heard his current sound, the “vibe” took a storm. Then we finally got the album in October, where we see the direction of his new sound. The album was well put together. His new sound, sounds amazing.
I wanted to know what exactly this vibe was, and I took to Twitter to find a way to describe this vibe. These are a couple of takes. “This album makes me want to have reckless sex all over Lagos” ,“I am having my first kid to this album” or my personal favorite. “If you play this album, you may mistakenly fall in love.” I think the vibe was pretty clear after reading those tweets.
My personal favorites on the album are True love, Mighty wine, Longtime (ft. Skepta), and of course, I have to add in their Ginger ft Bruna Boy. Two Afrobeat kings came together on this song and my ears were blessed.
Although Wizkid changed his sound, he did an amazing job on this album. It created quite a buzz. From Julie Adenuga Top 5 to the rough street of twitter. The Album held up. A lot of people were not expecting that sound. We waited for a Longtime for the album, but the wait was worth it.
